Report: Improving the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable children

In collaboration with the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) has analysed over 3,000 recommendations from 61 reports and inquiries into child protection and youth justice systems in Australia between 2010 and 2022.

Six themes repeatedly emerged across the research, including inadequate levels of investment; inadequate levels of information sharing and collaboration; limited workforce capacity and support; a lack of mechanisms for oversight, monitoring and transparency; and limited opportunities for child voice and participation.

The repeated themes suggest a wealth of existing evidence on how best to support vulnerable children and young people that can guide effective reform.
