Queensland is taking the next step to safeguard children
The Queensland Parliament has enacted the Child Safe Organisations Act 2024 to establish child safe standards and a Reportable Conduct Scheme to promote and protect the rights, interests and wellbeing of children under the age of 18 in Queensland.
The Act mandates that entities working with children implement 10 Child Safe Standards and adhere to a Universal Principle to ensure child safety. It also introduces a Reportable Conduct Scheme, requiring organisations to report and investigate allegations of misconduct by employees or volunteers.
Implementation will begin in phases from October 2025, with full compliance expected by April 2026 for the standards and by July 2027 for the Reportable Conduct Scheme. Organisations are encouraged to review the legislation and prepare for these upcoming requirements.
The Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC) will oversee implementation and compliance, offering resources, training materials and updates, as well as a dedicated Child Safe Organisations newsletter launching in 2025. For more information or to subscribe, visit www.qfcc.qld.gov.au/childsafe.
