Kids at the Table study: Co-investigating the Child Food Insecurity Experiences Scale with child detectives

“Kids at the Table: Co-investigating the Child Food Insecurity Experiences Scale (CFIES) with Child Detectives” is a PhD project at QUT, aiming to improve how household food insecurity (FI) is measured, using child-focused methods. The research will test the CFIES in Australia to see if it’s suitable for both research and practical use, with data collection starting in June 2024, supported by a scholarship from the Centre for Childhood Nutrition Research funded by Woolworths.

FI affects at least 12% of Australians, with children particularly vulnerable. Traditional methods rely on parent reports, which may miss key aspects of children’s experiences, especially psychological effects. This study will validate the CFIES with Australian children aged 8 to 12, ensuring it accurately captures children’s perspectives on FI.

The study involves face-to-face interviews with children, using engaging tools like drawing materials and puppets. Families who are willing to participate will be met at convenient locations, with informed consent obtained from caregivers and children.

Children receive $15 and families $30 for their time spent participating. This research aims to enhance FI measurement and provide guidelines for using child-report measures ethically and effectively. Get involved or find out more here.
