Consultation on Queensland’s restrictive practices authorisation framework is now open

In June, the Queensland Government introduced the Disability Services (Restrictive Practices) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 (the Bill) into the Queensland Parliament to implement a reformed authorisation framework for the use of regulated restrictive practices.

If passed by Parliament, the Bill will reform Queensland’s restrictive practices authorisation framework. The objectives of the Bill are to:

  • promote the reduction and elimination of the use of restrictive practices in relation to people with disability
  • move toward greater national consistency in authorisation processes
  • align Queensland’s restrictive practices authorisation framework with the NDIS rules.

The authorisation framework applies to restrictive practices used to support people with disability who are receiving National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports or services, or state-funded disability services from a relevant service provider.

For further information, please visit the reforming the use of restrictive practices webpage.

If you are affected by the use of restrictive practices in Queensland, the Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services wants to hear from you.

In particular, it is seeking your feedback on ways to make the reformed authorisation framework work for:

  • people with disability impacted by restrictive practices, and their families and guardians
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and people living in regional and remote areas
  • behaviour support practitioners and disability service providers.

The Department is interested in ideas about how best to support families, groups, organisations and individuals with any changes as a result of the reforms.

Please visit the have your say webpage.

Everything you need to know about the consultation is available on the website, including how to:

  • complete an online survey
  • provide a written submission.

The consultation closes at midnight on Sunday, 22 September 2024.
