Tenancy support for people experiencing DFV in Queensland rental properties
The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) continues to refine its services to better support people experiencing domestic and family violence in a rental property.
When customers contact the RTA Contact Centre on 1300 366 311 and indicate they are experiencing domestic and family violence, they will be asked if they are safe and can talk freely without risking their safety. They will then be transferred to a team member who can offer escalated support to help them understand their tenancy options. These options may include how to immediately vacate the rental property and end the tenancy early or make changes to stay in the property safely.
Immediate escalated support is also available to community support organisations or property managers/owners who indicate when calling the RTA that they are with a tenant or resident experiencing domestic and family violence in a rental property.
Helpful information can be found on the RTA’s Domestic violence in a rental property webpage, including the priority bond refund paper form for persons experiencing domestic and family violence and referrals to support services. The webpage also contains links to resources such as fact sheets and flow charts outlining the steps to take for tenants and property managers in general tenancies, and for residents and providers in rooming accommodation.
The RTA Contact Centre is available Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.00pm (excluding public holidays) and customers can access a free interpreter service if required. Contact 1300 366 311.
