Next Step Plus supporting young people to transition out of care

The Queensland Government is responsible for ensuring help and support is available to young people in their transition from statutory care to adulthood. Legislative changes in October 2018 resulted in the extension of eligibility for after care services to increase from 21 to 25 years of age.

Next Step Plus adopts a collaborative approach to providing support to young people leaving care. Service providers work closely with Child Safety Officers to undertake early planning while a young person is still in care and then provide more tailored and integrated responses and supports, once they have transitioned out of care.

In response to this, a redesign of the Next Step After Care (NSAC) program model has occurred resulting in the new Next Step Plus program. The Next Step Plus program’s vision is that all young people are resilient and supported, with the skills, capacity and capability to be the person they want to be.
