Help is just a phone call away for Queensland families in need
Queensland Government media release
Queensland families facing family and parenting challenges are encouraged to pick up the phone and call Family and Child Connect for free, confidential advice and support.
Minister for Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs Leanne Linard launched a new awareness campaign to remind Queensland families that help was always available and Family and Child Connect services have someone ready to listen when times are tough.
“Our Family and Child Connect services received more than 5,000 enquiries directly from Queensland parents from July 2020 to June 2021,” Ms Linard said.
“I want to say thank you to all the parents who took the first step and reached out for help, and I encourage other parents who might be struggling to do the same.
“We know that parents love their children and want the best for them, but sometimes they might just need an extra hand when it feels like the wheels are starting to fall off or they are running on empty.”
Ms Linard said there were 17 Family and Child Connect services located across Queensland, provided by trusted organisations ready to link families with the right service at the right time.
“Every family faces different challenges, but our experienced staff can provide advice and support for a wide range of issues including managing children’s behaviour, building stronger family relationships or addressing violence at home,” she said.
“They can also help with budgeting and managing money, addressing alcohol, drug or gambling problems, and liaising with housing, health care or other community or government services.”
Ms Linard acknowledged that the festive season and summer holidays often added extra pressures and stresses for families.
“With just one phone call to Family and Child Connect, parents can talk to someone who will listen and give them advice or put them in touch with the right service,” she said.
“Families can also feel assured that the service is unlimited, and they can call Family and Child Connect time and again if they need additional support and assistance.
“Family and Child Connect services are available year-round and have the local connections and expertise to help families bounce back.”
The new Family and Child Connect awareness campaign will run until June 2022 with advertisements reminding families to reach out and get the support they need.
