Applications now open: Legal Empowerment Leadership Course

This year’s Legal Empowerment Leadership Course (30 April – 17 May 2021) will bring together those who are unlocking and supporting the leadership of frontline Indigenous, land and environmental justice communities. For the first time the entire course is being held online, with a dedicated track for legal empowerment practitioners focused on land and environmental justice. Participants will take stock of collective knowledge, improve skills, and be able to challenge each other along the way.

From Indigenous communities fighting for legal rights to their forest and grazing land, to fence line communities combating coal plants that poison their air and water, land and environmental justice affects the well-being of ordinary people across the globe. Yet much of the global response has been expert-driven and top-down.

When people on the frontlines of ecological destruction can understand, use, and shape law, they can protect their health and livelihoods, and lead the way out of the global environmental crisis that threatens all of us.

This is only the beginning. Namati and the Legal Empowerment Network have ambitious plans for the coming years. They intend to build a corps of exceptional grassroots environmental justice groups from 25 countries to learn, grow, and act together.

Applications to the Legal Empowerment Leadership Course are open until 31 March 2021.
