Did you know that there are approximately two young carers in every classroom?
Many young carers find that their overwhelming responsibilities at home affect their ability to keep on track at school. Young carers are less likely to complete high school if they do not receive any support, which severely limits their life opportunities. It can also be difficult to recognise a young carer - some will not tell anyone that they care for someone at home for fear of being removed by child safety.
To help schools to identify and support young carers, Carers Queensland, in association with Education Queensland and FSG Brisbane, has developed a YSCI Young Carers Support Toolkit, which is a free resource available to all schools in Queensland. The toolkit is easy to use and contains great advice sourced from young carers and youth support coordinators.
