Queensland Accessing Interpreters Working Group

Australia's justice system provides a unique and challenging environment dealing frequently with cross-cultural issues. The responsiveness of courts and tribunals to culturally and linguistically diverse communities is a measure of society's commitment to equal access to the law for all.

This discussion paper aims to raise awareness of the important role of credentialed interpreters in courts and tribunals and of the need to improve the ability of legal practitioners to work effectively with interpreters.

The key messages in this paper reflect developments in contemporary practice across Australian courts and tribunals and serve to advance policy directions in Queensland which call for increased responsiveness to cultural and linguistic diversity to ensure social justice.
