The organisational development modules are designed to assist organisations to undertake more detailed work in some of the key areas of capability.

These modules will be most effective when accessed by organisations that have completed the Organisational Development Toolkit and have developed a Capability Development Plan (Tool C).

To help you identify the modules relevant to your organisation, the Business Development Areas from the Capability Development Plan (Tool C) are indicated at the start of each module.

Overview

In this module, Linda Hayes discusses the process of costing, pricing and budgeting for community service organisations.

Costing involves detailed identification, categorisation, measurement and valuation of all resource inputs exchanged or sacrificed to achieve an organisational service, program or activity outcome.

Pricing is very different from costing. Organisations have the majority of influence in decisions determining their costs but have less influence in decisions determining the price clients are prepared to pay for a particular service outcome.

At the core of budgeting is stakeholder agreement on exactly how limited, valuable resources are planned to be used to achieve strategic and operational plans.

Overview

In this module, Marcia Dwonczyk discusses the process of collaboration and partnering for community service organisations.

This module examines best practice around consortiums, partnerships and collaboration models of business practice in the context of change drivers in the community services sectors. The following areas will examined for their critical role in successful collaborative practice:

  • the organisational behaviour needed to work well with others
  • the enablers and blockers to effective collaboration
  • collaborative practice as a possibility to solve key sustainability issue such as back office capacity and competence.

Overview

In this module, Stacy Field discusses why taking a strategic approach to workforce planning is of critical importance to developing and maintaining your workforce into the future, especially in a climate of change.

This module uses the Workforce Council’s Workforce Planning Framework to begin exploring the key elements of workforce planning through three sessions:

 

  • Industry and workforce planning: Industry data/overview; what is workforce planning and development, and why it is important for community services, and; how to begin - Scoping and planning the project.
  • Future focus and workforce design: Key issues and trends impacting on health and community services delivery; designing a workforce to meet future demand; profiling your existing workforce; comparative analysis and identifying workforce issues in your organisation, and: prioritising workforce issues.
  • Implementation and resourcing: Facilitating the important shift from planning to implementation mode; managing and monitoring the plan; evaluating the plan, and; overview of key resources and initiatives to support workforce development.
