Improving housing outcomes for women and children escaping domestic and family violence is a major focus for the Department of Housing and Public Works.

The department will construct two new shelters on the Gold Coast and in North Brisbane, and will replace or renew shelters in three remote and discrete communities — Cherbourg, Pormpuraaw and Woorabinda — as announced in the recently released Queensland Housing Strategy 2017–2027.

The strategy builds on the department’s response to Not Now, Not Ever report recommendations, which includes constructing more shelters and improving access to housing assistance.
