Information sessions on Queensland's Human Rights Act, which commences on 1 January 2020, are to be held for non-government organisations across the state.

The Queensland Government, in partnership with Queensland Human Rights Commission (QHRC) and QCOSS, will hold human rights information sessions in 10 locations across Queensland.

Each session is designed to:

  • provide an introduction to the Human Rights Act and the functions of the QHRC
  • provide practical resources and tools to build your confidence to effectively meet your human rights obligations, including human rights complaints processes
  • provide you with a forum to connect with others in the human services sector about human rights issues and implications

Organisations contracted to provide services to the public on behalf of the Queensland Government are included under the Act as public entities, and as such they need to make decisions and act compatibly with human rights.

This involves considering humans rights in a broad range of activities from administrative and human resource decisions, to policy, procedure and service delivery decisions. It also includes handling complaints that relate to human rights.
