Older people within our communities bring strength of knowledge, skills and experience about disasters.

As well as being a valuable community resource for disaster resilence, some older people may require support to ensure their safety and wellbeing at times of disasters.

In recognition of the contribution that older people can make and that disaster preparedness for older people can be improved, Volunteering Queensland has developed the Disaster Preparedness for Older People project.

This project aims to ensure:

  • Older people can access relevant disaster preparedness information
  • Older people have opportunities to participate in disaster preparedness planning and volunteering; and
  • Agencies that support volunerable older people in the community are aware of the need to develop evacuation and disaster preparedness plans for their clients

Volunteering Queensland will be holding forums and workshops with local governments, emergency services and the agencies that support vulnerable seniors.

These workshops will result in a shared plan for the preparedness of seniors within the community.

The forum will provide:

  • Identification of the key players for disaster preparedness for older people
  • Stories from previous disaster events - in times of disaster what has worked well and what has not
  • Local disaster management arrangements: knowing the people, agencies and processes
  • The benefits of good practice disaster preparedness strategies
  • The tools and resources available to plan for business continuity and disaster management
  • How community based services can improve the capability of older people to prepare for and respond to natural disasters

Who should attend?

  • Community based agencies and aged care providers which support vulnerable older people
  • Peak bodies for aged care services
  • Emergency management agencies
