Welcome to Community Door's information portal about seniors.

There were around 3.3 million older Australians (over 65) in 2012, representing one in every seven people (14 per cent). This proportion has risen from 13.3 per cent in 2009 and 12.6 per cent in 2003. Around half of Australia's older population (1.7 million or 7.5 per cent of Australians) have a disability.

The Queensland Government has recently released Queensland: an age-friendly community, providing a framework that builds on the existing work and investment of the government.

Older Australians generally want to remain independent and in control of how and where they live; to stay connected and relevant to their families and communities; and be able to exercise some measure of choice over their care.

Older people make a significant contribution to the economy:

  • They spend $895 million on domestic travel annually.
  • They donate generously to charity. In the 1999-2000 tax year, over 65s accounted for 22 per cent of total donations while earning only 7 per cent of the population’s income.
  • Their unpaid work as carers and volunteers is valued at almost $39 billion per year.

Seniors can also experience specific mental health issues.

In this section you will find current news, resources and other information on topics relating to senior Australians.
