The community services sector provides the community with services that meet a broad range of needs. The delivery of services aims to promote physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Groups in the community that are marginalised or disadvantaged, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) families and people with a disability, are supported by government and non-government providers of community services. Non-government services are delivered by commercial and not-for-profit organisations.
Workers in the community services sector are expected to display sensitivity, a concern for others, good communication skills, and a non-judgmental approach to issues faced by individuals and communities. Those who work with children in a regulated sector (as defined by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000) are required to undergo a suitability check for working with children and be the holder of a current Blue Card.
