Consumer participation is central to providing effective services that are responsive and accountable to clients, carers and other stakeholders. The term ‘consumer’ means a person who consumes or uses commodities or services. In the following discussion the term can be used interchangeably with: client, service user or recipient, or member. Organisations may have different terminological preferences. In the United Kingdom for example, the acronym PPI, patient and public involvement, is often used instead of consumer participation.
