Churchill Education recently held a webinar on cultural competency, "Walking in two worlds".
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people have distinct and complex cultures which have been practiced for over 60,000 years and are still in practice today. To provide appropriate service delivery that meets Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people’s needs and concerns, or to be an effective co-worker of an Indigenous Australian, you need to fully understand their history and their culture.
Cultural awareness and knowledge provides workers with the ability to work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds, and to meet their needs through understanding, empathy and an appreciation of the barriers they face. The session covers the skills and knowledge required to identify Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety issues in the workplace, model cultural safety in work practices, and develop strategies to enhance cultural safety. In this session you will also learn about the Map that exists in Australia and its link to creating safe workplace cultures.
