At the inaugural Queensland Family Matters Forum held in Brisbane on 4 and 5 August, Minister for Child Safety, the Honourable Shannon Fentiman, announced a new Empowering Families Innovation Fund (EFIF) would help generate innovative, community-led ideas for keeping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families together, safe and thriving at home, in community, and in culture.

The EFIF is a three-year, $6 million investment commencing in 2016-17, that will ignite radically innovative ideas, as well as practical, locally-driven solutions, for addressing over-representation and closing the gap in life outcomes for vulnerable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

As outlined in Towards a Queensland action plan for vulnerable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families, the EFIF forms part of the first wave of contributions to the cross-sectoral action plan currently being developed in partnership with Family Matters.
