The Department of Communities through the Office for Seniors has the lead role across government for ageing and older people's issues. We share this responsibility with other relevant government agencies, including health, housing, disability and transport.
We value the significant contributions that seniors make to our communities and recognise the diversity of issues that affect seniors. We are committed to ensuring the needs, interests and concerns of seniors are listened and responded to.
We work in partnership with other government departments, seniors' organisations, service providers and academia, to develop programs that respond to the needs of seniors.
Our programs are designed to increase seniors' social participation and their safety and security. We also offer support services to seniors who are at risk of elder abuse including financial abuse. Our initiatives support grandparents who are raising their grandchildren and we promote positive profiles of seniors through our events and awards.
Our programs include:
Older Peoples' Action Program to encourage healthy ageing and increase seniors' social participation and sense of safety and security.
60 and Better Program to increase older people's awareness of healthy lifestyle options, decrease social isolation and improve linkages with community services.
Seniors Enquiry Line - a statewide telephone service that provides information on concessions, social activities, independent living, health, finance, retirement and support services for seniors.
Elder Abuse Prevention Unit - a statewide telephone helpline that provides information, support and referrals for seniors experiencing, or at risk of, elder abuse, their families and friends, and service providers.
Time for Grandparents Program, which provides respite for grandparents raising children by funding and facilitating access to recreational camps and day activities.
Seniors Legal and Support Services in Hervey Bay, Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba and Brisbane, where solicitors and social workers provide services to seniors experiencing, or at risk of, elder abuse and financial exploitation.
